Pink Toenails on my Mind
This weekend I got my daily digest from Faith and Family Live and took a glance at some of the articles. "Handsome in Pink" got my attention so I took some time to read the brief opinion article.
I want to stop here and say that while some of the articles are interesting and informative every once in a while one pops up that I just don't agree with on any level. Don't even get me started on their recent one on homosexuality. That's a rant for another day.
But, the Today Show ran a segment on this pink toes controversy and I just had to get on here and voice my two cents.
For those of you who are unaware this news item is based on an uproar over a J.Crew advertisement in which a mom is seen painting her son's toe nails pink. Yep...that's all. People are so upset over this. People prattling on about loss of gender rolls in society. Ummm...because he wore some nail polish? Is it that it's pink? Would a more boyish color have been okay? Or is it that it's nail polish on him period?
No one would think twice if my little girl was wearing a tool belt or donning a tie. In fact...they would find it cute! But, if I painted my son's toe nails I guarantee I'd get some looks and comments. First off...why do people feel so free to just walk up and voice their opinions to moms? I had an middle aged lady who told me I better put a hat on Gabriel when he was still a baby (it was like 70 degrees out). I just smiled and kept walking. I wanted to say...if you want to put a hat on a baby go have a baby of your own. But, it wasn't worth it. A little boy wanted to wear nail polish. Whether it's because he thinks it is pretty, or because he wanted to spend time with mommy, or he saw his sisters doing it and thought it looked like fun, or even if they just did it for the ad...
This kid will not be scarred for life because his toe nails were pink for a few days. Wanting pink toe nails doesn't make you gay, or bisexual, or mean that you were born the wrong sex...it means he wanted to have pink toe nails for a few days. Gabriel often goes for the pink and purple crayons. They're pretty colors. Lorelai likes to play with Gabriel's big trucks. Ummm...I don't see a problem with any of that.
Maybe I'm just too "modern" or maybe I don't "care enough" but call me crazy...they're my kids and I love them. No matter what color their toe nails are. And after all...don't real men wear pink? I guess that makes that little boy a real man. To bad others can't man up and leave well enough alone.
