The Drowsy Chaperone
On Wednesday night I had the pleasure of going to Houston to see a traveling production of Broadway's The Drowsy Chaperone. Now the highlight of this show was not necessarily the show itself but seeing Jonathan Crombie in person from 5th row Center Orchestra seats!!! I can hear it now..."Who did you see? I've never heard of him." Well, if you are a fan of the Anne of Green Gables series and have seen the Kevin Sullivan production that used to play on the Disney Channel then you know him as the dashing and incredibly handsome Gilbert Blythe. Let me tell you...I was bouncing with excitement while I was getting ready, and he did not disappoint!!! See how gorgeous he was? Who didn't want to be Mrs. Gilbert Blythe?!The show itself was great. But, Jonathan was hilarious. It seemed like all of his dialog was improv (I know it wasn't but it sure seemed that way)...he was so natural. I laughed so hard I was crying!!! He has such diversity and range in his acting abilities. The pictures from the show at the very top don't do him justice, but he is still quite handsome. I am begging Brian to go back with me. The rest of the cast was wonderful as well and the set design was very creative. If the show comes your way I highly recommend you see it...even if you don't already understand the awesomeness that is Jonathan Crombie. Here is a synopsis:
A lonely musical fan in his shabby apartment explains his technique for chasing the blues and offers to share his favorite show, the 1928 romp The Drowsy Chaperone. As the record plays, the show springs to glorious life, characters entering through the refrigerator or fold-down bed, their vivid world gradually overtaking humdrum reality.
Go and see it. It is a great night at the theatre and seeing Gilbert Blythe in person is worth the price of the ticket. The laugh til' you cry hilarity that he brings to the show is just an added bonus. ;)
