I Can Relate

Like many many people out there...I have those precious children, teachers, staff, and parents on my mind.  The largest reason this tragedy hits home for so many of us is we're parents.  That doesn't mean that you can't feel sad or a sense of loss from this if you aren't.  But, honestly...there is a love you never knew you were capable of until your children entered your lives.  Especially as a mom.  I can't speak for dad's out there, but this child was my responsibility from day 1.  9 months, completely and solely my responsibility.  There's a connection there that can't be explained and that no one else will ever have with your child.  As my kids grow and change...I can see them at school, and it's not easy to send them off for time away from you.  You are giving up a large part of what you were put in their lives to do.  Take care of them.  Raise them.  Protect them.  But, the moment your child enters that school, you are entrusting their well being to an entirely different, and at first, unknown group of people.

I hope that the parents who are suffering this terrible loss, and really, ANY parent out there knows that when you drop your child off at school that precious child is spending their day with someone who loves them deeply and truly.  (And yes...there are even some wacko teachers out there, but they are few and far between and we will not focus on them today.)  For 6 years I had the privilege of being that teacher.  Many students passed through my classroom in those 6 years.  Many smiling faces, so willing to please, learn, absorb...the giggles, the focus....  I LOVED those kids.

Every year I made a point to let my classes know that I loved them like my own children.  That when they left those doors at the end of the year...they NEVER ceased to be my students.  My kids.  That's what I call them when they're not around...my kids.  Most teachers do.  Because they are.  You can't spend that much time teaching, helping, and caring for a child without loving them.

I taught 1st grade for a portion of those 6 years.  The kids that died on Friday were first graders.  Every child I ever taught at that age flashed before my eyes.  I can't imagine what that scene must have been like from the child's point of view.  But, as a teacher, who practiced lock downs with her classes/school...I can honestly say that I would have protected them with everything I had in me.  I would have given my life for any single one of theirs.  It is not fair, it is not just, for a child to have their future stripped away from them.  It is not fair to rob those parents of their future with that much loved child.  The child they prayed would enter their lives.

Following a lock down practice, I always took time to talk with my kids about why we had that drill in place.  It's not an easy thing to talk about, but they have to take it seriously.  So, we always took time for questions.  I remember, vividly, a first grader asking me what would I (the teacher) do if someone came in and tried to hurt them.  I told them that if that ever happened, and odds were slim, but, if that ever happened, I would do everything I could do to keep them safe from harm.  That I loved them like my own and just like their parents it was my job to protect them.

An intense conversation to have with first graders.  And while I hope they don't remember the conversation in total, I do hope that they carry with them that I cherished them.  Loved them.

I have had a student who brought a knife into my classroom.  I stood up to the principal and told them that student was not welcome back in my class.  That I had a duty to protect my students.  Even if that was from another student.

I had a student who tried to hit me with a desk drawer and tried to stab me with scissors.  But, I did my best to make sure that he NEVER harmed another student.  I took a special training course to learn how to restrain this particular child so that he could stay safe, I could stay safe, and the other students could stay safe.  It's a sad world we live in when a teacher has to learn how to restrain a student.

Both of these children were in desperate need of some mental healthcare.  I don't know what happened to the first child the rest of his schooling.  I do know that the second student, a first grader, made it all of the way to third grade before the mother acknowledged there was a problem, and he was sent to get some help in a special facility.

I think gun control laws are something that we desperately need to discuss, but maybe equally as urgent is the need to discuss how we deal with mental health in this country.  In schools and in homes we pass the buck.  We move these children along through life, not able to, or not willing to deal with the problem at hand.  I know because I lived it as a teacher.  Desperately wanting to get help for these children, but running into a brick wall at every turn.

And in the end, sadly, it may not only be that child we hurt by not getting them the help they need.  What if my child had been in that school in Newtown?  What if yours had been?  What if you knew that young man had been in need of help for years, but nothing was, or could be done to help him, and YOUR child, your family suffered because of it.

So, on Monday, THANK your child's teacher from the bottom of your heart for their love, care and guidance that they give to your child day in and day out.  And then...start a conversation about what needs to be done to help those with mental health issues.  Talk to people about gun control.  It's an uncomfortable conversation for sure, but maybe, the more we talk, the more we can come together to save our children whether they be perfectly healthy, or the ones who need some extra help in life.

Now I'm off to go get my kid's dressed for bed, sit on the couch with one in each arm, and thank God that I have the privilege of being their Mommy.

Gingerbread Houses

I bought a couple of Gingerbread House kits at Target for the kids.  Gabriel was a task master.  He was very organized, methodical, and tried really hard to make it look like the box.  Lorelai asked me to help with the icing and then got bored of sticking on the candy.  She just wanted to eat it.  Shocker.  :)

I don't have any pictures of the completed houses.  The kids began eating them pretty much right away.  But, they sure had fun singing Christmas Carols while we worked.

Thanksgiving 2012

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  We celebrated Thanksgiving Day just as our little family of 4.  Can I tell you it was really nice to just celebrate a holiday with the four of us?  :)  Brian did a great job with dinner as usual.  The kids and I watched the Macy's Parade.  My high school band was performing in it this year! :)  I'm really proud of them.  The band has come so far, and they did a great job.  Here they are (complete with fight song as they march off!):

The kiddos were especially excited to see Santa at the end of the parade.  Gabriel exclaimed, "It's Santa!  I need to sit down!"  He then came running to the couch.  lol  It's so fun to see how he understands the whole Santa thing now.

The kids were also helpful in the kitchen.  They assisted me with the stuffing, and helped Brian with the cherry pie.

Lorelai wore Gabriel's Turkey Shirt from last year:

I left on Friday morning for a quilt retreat up near Tulsa.  It was a great time to relax work on Gabriel's bed quilt and to just be myself for a weekend.

Missing Broadway

I have pictures to post, but need to edit them.

In the meantime...I have been missing Broadway.  Maybe it's knowing we'll be visiting my parents in May, but I am so wanting to attend a show!  I guess a few choice youtube clips will have to do.

I LOVE when Neil Patrick Harris hosts the Tony's.  Here he is in 2012 and 2011.  Hilarious!

This is the next show I'd love to see:

And because...who doesn't love a little Hugh Jackman:

Halloween 2012

Lets just say...I've been looking forward to Halloween this year for a while.  Gabriel LOVES Halloween.  He claims it's his favorite holiday.  And what's not to love about getting to dress up as someone else?  He declared on his birthday in March (!) that he wanted to be Zurg from Toy Story.  This costume has a lot of time and planning invested in it.  Not to mention a lot of nights tossing and turning over how to do it, and then the nights staying up working on it until midnight...it was SO worth it to see his face light up when he put it on for the first time.  (And to see him today playing "super heroes and villians" with his friends at school all in costume.  lol)

Then we have Lorelai, who also decided many months ago that she wanted to be a doggy.  And then she specified a purple doggy.  Mommy lives to please.  :)  And she is the cutest purple doggy you'll ever set eyes on!  Especially when she says, "Woof!  Woofs!"

You can see her tail hanging down between her legs.  I didn't get a great shot of her where you can see it in all it's waggy glory.  lol  Today at school she was chasing her tail.  HA!  And THANK YOU Lorelai for picking an "easy" costume for Mommy.

They were both thrilled to bits, and once again I was reminded why the late nights of sewing are all worth it!  :)  So worth it!!!

Disney World 2012

What a whirlwind the last week has been, but a great one.  We spent the last week in Disney World with the Wood side of the family.  We drove up to Matt and Angie's on Saturday and then all of us headed to the airport together on Sunday to meet the Grandparents in Disney World at the Animal Kingdom Lodge.  We're lucky that my parents are Vacation Club members so we get exceptionally nice digs.  A 3 bedroom space with living room, kitchen and dining room (as well as a loft), laundry in our room, and 4 bathrooms!!!  The best part of this hotel was the view out onto the Savannah with our 3, yes 3!, balconies.

Since there are so many pictures things may go slightly out of order.

We spend a good bit of time at the hotel since the kids are little.  We also had an unfortunate stomach bug that hit the majority of the family over the week.  :(  But, having the animals to look out on, some new souvenirs, and a bunch of family around made for a good time in the "room."  Various adult groups went out for dinner and we rotated out who watched the kids.  It was so great to see once again how fabulously they all get along!

We celebrated Brian's birthday while we were there.
I wish Caroline was in focus in this.  She backed up right as I was taking the picture.

We spent a LOT of time at the pool, but the kids also ventured out to the playground.  Both kids attempted the big slide at the pool.  Neither was wanting to go for a second time.  So we stuck with the little slide.

Gabriel saw 2 snakes at Animal Kingdom and came home with this giant rubber snake.

The girls were especially enamored with the savannah view.  Lorelai woke up one morning very close to my face (we shared a bed), and whispered, "There are zebras out there.  There are cows out there.  Chomp!  Chomp!  They eat the grass."
Lorelai found this Tinker Bell baby at a shop.
The kids enjoyed riding the "school bus."  lol

A bit of our savannah view at the Vacation Club area at Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Above Lorelai waits for her first day at a Disney Park.  We began with Epcot.  The Food and Wine Festival was going on at the time.  I was a bit bummed that I didn't get to spend more time there.  There was some AMAZING food to be eaten.  It's probably better for my waistline that I didn't get to though.  I did get to have some Argentinian food though, and then we ate in the Cantina in Mexico.

Below Lorelai and Caroline enjoy some Mexican food.

Lorelai and Gabriel took their picture with Donald Duck at Epcot.  But, it would appear the Photopass guy messed up and it didn't link up to our card.  :(  I think Grandma and Grandpa got some shots though.

On Tuesday we went to Animal Kingdom.  This turned out to be a difficult day.  Barrett had gotten sick in the early morning hours and was still not well.  Brian got sick that morning before we left and then Caroline fell pray to the stomach bug that afternoon as well.  :/  My dad was off golfing and Matt stayed home with Barrett.  So, my mom, Angie and I took my kids and Caroline to the park.  I only got 2 pictures from this day since it was so crazy.  And the second one turned out blurred.  :/

On Wednesday we hit Downtown Disney.  My mom had scheduled a lunch at T-Rex to celebrate.  The boys hit up the Lego store (Gabriel got his very first big kid Legos!!!), while Lorelai put a dent in the souvenir cash getting a Belle doll and a Belle purse.  This girl loves a good purse.  lol

Random side note.  Gabriel has deemed his Uncle Matt the most fun person on the trip.  He announced that randomly in the car today.  Congratulations, Matt!!!  :)
On Thursday we had our first visit to the Magic Kingdom.  (We went back on Friday.)  It started off great with pictures in front of the castle.  It is GORGEOUS when made up for fall/Halloween!!!  Just stunning.  Then we went straight to the Buzz Lightyear ride that Gabriel has been talking about for months now.  And...he hated it.  He sobbed the entire time.  But, he made sure his Daddy kept shooting the aliens through his tears.  Lorelai on the other hand LOVED all of the rides except the carousel (which is my fault I think for putting her on a horse that was up high and not at my level when we began).  She was yelling, "I shoot Zurg!  I shoot Zurg!"  lol

Teacups were a big hit.  As well as the Speedway, Dumbo, and Small World.
 Oh, and Winnie the Pooh.

Miss Lorelai was the only tyke to continue to want to see characters.  On Thursday she met Snow White as we were leaving.  Snow White talked to her for a good bit of time, and Lorelai could not stop saying, "Snow White was SO nice to me!  Snow White LIKES me!"  lol  She even said "Hi" to Snow White.  On Friday she met TINKER BELL!!!!!  I think she was a bit starstruck with that one.  She also met Periwinkle (the new fairy) and Princess Jasmine.  I was beyond impressed, proud, and surprised!!!
After the Buzz ride, Gabriel declared that he no longer liked Zurg.  :/  I felt so badly, and was a little worried that I'd have to plan an entirely new costume for him.  Luckily he seems to have gotten over it.
Saturday was spent at Hollywood Studios.  I didn't think there would be much to do there for the kids, but we actually spent our longest day at a park.  We went to the Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground first.  They all LOVED that!  Lorelai was obsessed with the tunnel slide, and Gabriel enjoyed the spider web.  We then went to Star Tours.  Gabriel was 1/2" too short, but Grandpa watched him while I went on with Barrett, Matt, and Angie.  I got the boys lightsabers afterwards.  :)  We hit up the Beauty and the Beast show, The Little Mermaid, The Pixar Parade, and Toy Story Mania.

Sunday we headed home.  Gabriel threw up about 3 minutes away from home in the car and has been sick today as well.  :/  At least it wasn't on the trip or at the beginning of the drive home from Dallas.  We had a fantastic time, and while in some ways it's nice to be home, I really could have stayed longer. Things seem so boring now that we're back and a little less magical now that we're back in our messy house.

Can't wait to go back!  :)

Nature Walk

We went on a walk in the local park.  The kids brought along some big cups to collect nature finds.  Or treasures as we called them.
Lorelai was having fun picking these flowers.  I asked her to smell one of them.  This is what she did...
Gabriel created an entire story about this snake that we were hunting on the walking trail.  Here he is checking this big rock for snakes...

Vintage Finds

The kids and I hit up an antique store looking for a couple of items that can double as furniture for their rooms and photo props when I need one.  The first find was this darling little table and chair set that I have put in my son's room:

I have ideas on how I can use this for our Christmas pictures.  And my guess is it's from like the 40's maybe.

Then in the same booth (it was an Antique Mall) I happened upon this 2-drawer coffee table:

Honestly...it seems too tall for a coffee table, but at the same time too short to be something else.  I was originally wanting a trunk or some sort of sweater chest for the foot of her bed, but when I saw this I was hooked.  I had planned on using the chest for storage for her dolls.  She has a TON!  But, when I saw this I knew I wanted it for her little doll house.  She's having a blast setting everything up.

Both were VERY reasonable priced and were marked as the final price.  But, I asked if they would call the vendor and see if they would reduce it because I was purchasing two large items.  They called, and while they said it sounded like it pained the dealer...she gave me 10% off of everything!!!  I was so pleased, and I didn't have to be pushy.  See!  It never hurts to ask.  And that lady made a loyal customer today.  I'll be sure to check out her booth again and again.

Hank the Cowdog

Today we took the kids to the Oklahoma Children's Theatre to see their production of Hank the Cowdog.

Gabriel was very focused on the show and he was hard to read.  He said that he liked it and that "those people were silly in their costumes."  Lorelai watched but was mostly scared the entire show.  She says she liked it though.

I really love children's theatres.  They're a great introduction to theatre for little kids, in a small "in the round" style.  Everyone has a good seat.  We REALLY look forward to taking the kids back for another production.  At the end all of the cast heads out to the lobby so the kids can take pictures with them and get autographs.  While my kiddos weren't really up for that, one of the cast members did walk us out and thank us for coming.  LOVE people who are so great to kids!  We need more people like that.

While I didn't take pictures during the show for obvious reasons, I did take a couple of Gabriel waiting for the show.  (Lorelai was huddled up on my lap closing her eyes because she was scared.  lol  Poor thing.)

As a reward for the kid's good behavior at the show we took them out for frozen yogurt afterwards.

Lorelai and I had the following conversation:

Me:  Lorelai.  What was your favorite part of the play?
Lorelai:  The strawberries.  <They were on her frozen yogurt.  lol>

"We're goin' to the zoo, zoo, zoo..."

I know.  We go to the zoo a lot.  We are now on our second year of membership at the zoo, and it's really nice to enjoy such a lovely facility while we're here.  Fun things this excursion:

1)  While visiting the gorillas (which are usually standoffish) not one but TWO gorillas came up to Gabriel at the window.  The second gave him a kiss on the glass and a high five.  I kid you not!!!  It was amazing.  I'm telling you...this little boy has something innate in him that animals just pick up on.  He's been so gentle with them since he was a baby and they can sense it.  I so wanted to grab my camera, but I would have had to stand up and I was afraid I would spook the gorilla away.

(Side note:  Lorelai was terrified of them.)

2)  We also visited the playground at the zoo for the first time.  It was HUGE!  We need to go back as we only visited one little section of it.

Staying Present

I didn't post yesterday.  That was intentional.

Every year that I have had this blog I have posted about September 11.  It has been a bit therapeutic.  Because, while my dad lived, I'm lucky, it is still a gigantic jolt to the system.  Watching those images every year on TV.  It's the closest I'll probably ever get to time travel as my mind goes right back to that day.  It's not a happy experience folks.  Sure...it ends with joy and gratefulness...but the waiting...oh the waiting.

So why didn't I post yesterday?  Because after last year's post in which I shared my side of the "story" I feel a sense of closure.  I'm not sure why.  This year was the first time I almost forgot about it.  And while I'll never forget...who could?  It was really nice to not feel chained to that date for the first time.

I am finally able to remain in the present on September 11.  It took 11 years, but I am ever so grateful.  I'm sure I'm not explaining this feeling effectively, but there it is.

This year I got to enjoy the small things...like converting my kids play table back to sand for the cooler weather months.  :)

Holy Lightroom!

So, I've been growing increasingly frustrated with my photo editing options.  PicMonkey and the like are good, but I want something GREAT!  My Photoshop Elements program is like trying to do something in Chinese, and it's so outdated now that it's hard to find good online tutorials.  I really just don't have the time to devote to it either.

So, what is a girl to do?  I need the power of Photoshop but with the ease of use of PicMonkey.  Aha!

Enter Lightroom 4.  :)  These are the first two pictures I edited...and I actually did it fairly quickly...but spent a lot of time playing around.  I still have A LOT to learn as it is a VERY powerful program.  But, I think I'm getting the hang of it.  Don't you?

Here are some screenshots I captured so you can see the before and after images.  (Before on the left, after on the right.)  I also want to thank my Father-in-Law for my amazing new lens.  Both of these images were taken with it and it is AMAZING!!!  My new go to lens.

So, lets talk about what I did.  In Lorelai's picture above her face was slightly blurred as it seems I focused on her hair on the left side.  (This kid moves FAST!!!)  The picture was kind of dark.  So the first thing I did was to use some "presets."  These are prefabbed filters you can download (some are free some have to be purchased) for Lightroom.  The first preset I used was a "lighten".  I then put on another filter to bring out the blues in the picture.  I believe it was called "Berry."  Her cheeks were kind of dull in the original image so I added some rosiness to them with a brush, and I also lightened her eyes with an eye sparkle brush, and luminated the image.  I whitened her teeth a smidge, smoothed out her skinso the dark lines around her mouth and nose lightened up, and took out some of the dinner she had on the corner of her mouth.  (This kid always has food on her face!  HA!)  Then I added another "preset" and sharpened the image up a bit so her face was a bit more in focus.

Below we have Gabriel's picture with Paisley, and the toad we caught in his critter cage.  I love his expression here.  He's actually watching an airplane in the sky, while Paisley thinks about how she can get the toad.  The color in this picture is SUPER flat.  Shadowy...blah.  So, I added a preset that brings a golden sunset hue to the picture.  This lightened up his face, brightened the grass, fence, and Paisley as well.  Then I went in and softened some of the lines where his jawbone line meets his neck, and around his nose.  I brightened his eyes, whitened his teeth a smidge, and then added a chapstick to his lips to smooth them out.  Took out a couple little blemishes (i.e. small battle wounds) and voila!  Gorgeous no?
This program is soooo user friendly (for me at least).  No creating 60 layers to do each little task.  Here are the "after" pictures so you can see them in their full glory.  I'm really pleased and look forward to using this program even more!

ABCs

Gabriel surprised us today by recognizing some letters!  He's so shy about sharing what he knows (academically speaking) that it's hard to get much out of him.

Lorelai on the other hand wanted to share her latest "trick."  :)

Things to note:

 1)  Gabriel didn't want to sing for the camera because he is shy.  At least that's what he told me moments before this video.

2)  Lorelai leaves out 5 because Gabriel does. I don't really understand why as they can both count just fine.  But, they seem to enjoy leaving out 5.

3)  I have no idea how she learned to sing her numbers up and down like that.  Leave it to Lorelai.  lol

4)  At the end she says, "Ready or not here me come."  Can you tell we've been playing a lot of hide and seek lately?

Enjoy!

Happy 2nd Birthday, Lorelai!

On Sunday our sweet baby girl turned 2.  Brian reminded me that she hasn't been a baby for a while what with her running, jumping, dancing, climbing, and constant talking.  HA!

She still says she's my baby.  :)

What can I tell you about Lorelai at this age?  She loves Elmo, Tinkerbell, Hello Kitty, Disney Princess toys, and baby dolls.  She is a crazy whirlwind of energy, and I'm so glad she normally sleeps in a bit past Gabriel as he and I are not morning people and need to wake up a bit before we can deal with her 0-60 personality with a smile on our faces.  lol  She has the greatest laugh, and her little eyes sparkle when she smiles.  My dad used to say that about me.  I now know what he was talking about.  She loves to dip all food in Ranch...or pretty much any kind of condiment.  She loves to sing and dance, and of course copy anything Gabriel does.  She loves pretending to do hair and make up, putting on her necklaces and shoes.  And this girl...she could talk the hind leg off a mule.

She had a GREAT birthday.  She got necklaces...
Gabriel got a few presents as well (a Bumblebee Transformer)...
Some nice big "Barbie" size Disney Fairies... (all of the above are from Grandma and Grandpa Wood)

Granddad got each of the kids a fun place setting for the table...
(there's something else from him a bit further down).
Lorelai's birthday fun got spread out a bit.  As packages arrived the kids begged and begged to open them.  Eventually, for my own sanity...we began opening them.  Besides...who doesn't like birthday WEEK!!!?

On Saturday evening we took the kids to the zoo.  They've been begging to go all summer and it was in the 80's that night so we headed out for the last of the zoo summer hours.

On birthday morning (side note...Lorelai picked her new winter pajamas to wear...we did not put her in fleece pajamas in the summer by our choice.  HA!) Lorelai was beyond excited to find a baby nursery center for her from Mommy and Daddy!  We hit the jackpot with her with that one.  She played on that thing ALL DAY LONG!!!!  :D
We also got her a pretend make up set.
Grandma Cherlyn and Grandpa Greg got Gabriel this great police dress up set.  He spent the morning handcuffing all of us and some of the furniture.
They also got Lorelai this double stroller (in addition to some cute fairy sheets for her big girl bed and the darling vanity for her room).  And Granddad got her this Elmo that has the dress up features for practicing skills like buttoning, zippering, etc.
This kid could open up a daycare.  She knows exactly what to do with all of these dolls in the nursery.

If you visit my craft blog you saw me post about the Dresden Doll Quilt I made for her out of Little Red Riding Hood fabric.  It was a hit, and has been put to good use with many of the babies.  :)  So glad she likes it.  I LOVED making it for her.

The "theme" of Lorelai's birthday was Elmo.  These aren't the greatest, but she could at least recognize who it was.  lol
I also made some Elmo's out of paper lanterns and card stock.  I was really happy with these:

(Yeah, I'm in desperate need of a haircut...but I'm trying to grow it out.)  Surprisingly her candle blowing was so dainty that she needed a bit of assistance.

We all had a wonderful time celebrating this amazing, spirited, joyful, loving, smart, and beautiful little girl that I am proud to call my daughter.  :)  Happy birthday, my darling Lorelai!!!!!

At the Playground

The weather has been cooling off a bit here so we have enjoyed a couple of outings to the park.  It has been oh so nice!!!

I have a new iPod.  Long story.  But, the new one takes video.  It's so nice to have it when I'm out and about with the kids!  Who knows how long Lorelai would have stayed in this spot talking to me if Gabriel hadn't been in need of help.  Sorry about the wind...it is Oklahoma though.
